Request CI Planning Workshop

Introduction

Research Cyberinfrastructure is more than high-performance computing. It includes the people, data, software, systems, and policies that support research, education, and workforce development across an institution. As technology requirements continue to evolve, many institutions find that the expertise needed to support these activities is distributed across faculty, libraries, information technology, research administration, and institutional leadership.

Through the RIO-NM award, NM EPSCoR offers facilitated Research Computing and Data (RCD) workshops designed to help institutions develop a shared understanding of their current cyberinfrastructure capabilities and future opportunities. Using the CaRCC Capabilities Model and Internet2 Cyberinfrastructure Planning resources, workshop participants engage in structured conversations that bring together stakeholders from across the institution to identify strengths, uncover opportunities, and build a common language for strategic planning.

What Participants Gain

While completing a Capabilities Model assessment is an important outcome, the primary value of the workshop comes from the discussions that occur during the process. Institutions gain a completed assessment, new connections among stakeholders who may not regularly collaborate, identified strengths and opportunities, a foundation for future CI planning efforts, and a baseline that can be revisited over time to measure progress. Many participants discover opportunities, partnerships, and service alignments that were already available within their institution but had not previously been connected through a structured planning process.

Who Should Apply

These workshops are open to any New Mexico higher education institution interested in improving its understanding of research cyberinfrastructure, research computing, data services, or related support capabilities.

  • Institutions are encouraged to identify representatives from across the Five Facings of the CaRCC model, including:
  • Faculty and research support personnel
  • Librarians and data specialists
  • Application, software, or instructional technology staff
  • Systems, networking, cloud, and security professionals
  • Research administration, academic leadership, CIOs, VPRs, deans, directors, and other strategic stakeholders

Participation is not limited to research-intensive universities. Community colleges, tribal colleges, regional institutions, teaching-focused institutions, emerging research institutions, and workforce-development programs are all encouraged to apply. In many organizations, a single individual may represent multiple perspectives.

Workshop Format

NM EPSCoR facilitates a structured one to two day workshop in which institutional stakeholders work collaboratively through the Capabilities Model and discuss how the results can inform future cyberinfrastructure planning. Limited follow-up activities may be conducted after the workshop to clarify responses and support planning efforts.
